Welcome Apps in GIS Class!

 Hello Everyone! 

My name is Nathan Berger and I am excited to begin the Applications In GIS class at the UWF GIS Program for GIS. It is exciting to meet everyone. I wanted to create a blog post to introduce myself, give some background information of who OI am, and why I decided to pursue GIS throughput the past few years. 

I hope I don't bore you, so I'll be sure to add plenty of pictures of my pets...

I am 27 years old. I love UGA football, grilling out with my dogs, enjoying a nice bonfire, sampling local craft beer, weightlifting, and playing RPG video games on my PlayStation.

But what does any of that have to do with GIS?


It Doesn't...…lol

My background with GIS comes from the United states Navy with my experience working for EUCOM theatre command with multiple federal agencies, including the National Geospatial -Intelligence Agency and the Defense Intelligence agency. Besides my military experience, I currently am employed at a local police department using GIS to map crime data. I still have a lot to learn, which is why I decided to pursue this program, so I look forward to learning from each and everyone of you in this class.

Why the University of West Florida?


I am very passionate about GIS and read online that this program has a ton to offer. The program is very affordable, and the customer service from the admissions department was excellent. The UWF GIS program was rated in the top 15 best online GIS programs in the country according to best college reviews website, putting UWF at number 7.


What is it that I hope to accomplish from this Masters program in GIS?


I really want to learn more about web based GIS applications, such as story maps, dashboards, and web app builder. I feel as if everything is moving to be web based, and having a more extensive knowledge of these applications will greatly help me in my career.

 Elevation Models For GIS Today we are going to run through some analysis of comparing Digital Elevation Models (DEM's) to Triangular Irregular Networks (TIN's) using Arc GIS Pro.   One of the main differences between TIN's and DEM's, is that a DEM file is raster based, whereas a TIN elevation model is vector based. Isarithmic Mapping: Annual Rainfall in Washington

  Isarithmic Mapping Today we are going to talk about Isarithmic Mapping! This type of mapping is a way to explain smooth or continuous phenomenon such as a heat map, weather, temperature or rainfall.  There are two types of these kind of maps, Isopleth and Isometric . .. Isopleth Maps : These are made from perceptual poi nt data such as the population of an area or the rate of crime in an area. These maps should be normalized if using raw data and should come from averages, densities, and ways to standardize the data. Such as the number of Covid cases per every 10,000 people, rather than coloring polygons of counties based on the number of covid cases.  Isometric Maps : These come from true point data, such as crime locations as points at a certain address or X and Y coordinate The two rainfall maps of Washington below are Isopleth maps as they are using perceptual data of areas regarding their average rainfall in the state of Washington.
